Christensen Says Debates Should Be Open

Mark Christensen, the only Republican Candidate for the Nebraska Legislature in the 44th District, welcomes the opportunity to discuss the policies that will affect each of our lives. Christensen won the primary and is the only candidate remaining in the race who is endorsed by Nebraska Right to Life.

AARP officials out of Lincoln have agreed to sponsor an open debate with cosponsors of one or more of the local media in McCook. Tentative plans for the debate are for it to be held at the McCook Senior Center on Oct 2, 2006 at 4:30 p.m.

AARP members will be allowed to submit questions to the debate panel prior to the event. Questions will also be accepted from the general public the night of the debate. The debate panel will select questions from both groups.

Christensen has spoken with the proper media equipped to broadcast such debates. Christensen expressed that it’s important to use an "Open Format" style of debate. It is the view of the Christensen campaign that debates be tailored to best suit the voter, not the candidates themselves.

Earlier, the democratic opponent in the 44th District legislative race suggested a "Themed Format" approach, thus isolating only single issues being discussed in particular communities. Christensen believes that the voter should be free to ask any question of concern in any community.

Christensen stated: “I have reviewed the issues and researched the process by which policy is formed. I have learned that modifying such things as Tax Code and State Aid for Schools will not happen because you're simply familiar with the current facts and figures. A lot of what makes things happen in Lincoln hinges on one’s ability to develop quality relationships with other senators and public officials. Good relationships are built on trust. With that in mind, I feel that any debate should be for the purpose of better understanding the character of the candidate. This can only be achieved in an open floor debate setting.”

Christensen continued: “In the 44th District it could go without saying that most people could do without weekly media exchanges concerning the nuts and bolts development of election events. While such style may seem to be the norm for big government, it simply isn't the norm here.” Christensen further stated that he “will not be party to fueling a Washington D.C. brand of politics in the 44th District.”

“I appreciate those who are supporting me and my campaign,” Christensen said. “Working together, we can preserve the good things we currently share and move forward to develop even more positive growth in the 44th District.
